The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has commended Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State for granting a pardon to Mr Sunday Jackson, a farmer who was previously sentenced to death following a fatal incident in which he reportedly acted in self-defence.

The Northern CAN is currently factionalised along a leadership dispute, with one group led by Rev. Joseph Hayab and another by Rev. Yakubu Pam.

However, in a statement issued on behalf of the association by Rev. Yakubu Pam, it described the governor’s action as courageous, compassionate, and a strong demonstration of justice guided by mercy.

According to the statement, the pardon has brought immense relief and renewed hope to many Nigerians, particularly human rights advocates, farmers, and rural dwellers who followed the case with deep concern.

Northern CAN noted that the case attracted nationwide attention due to the circumstances surrounding Jackson’s conviction, which many believed did not adequately consider his right to defend his life while carrying out his lawful occupation.

“Evidence and public narratives consistently pointed to the fact that Mr Jackson acted in self-defense in the face of imminent danger,” the statement said, adding that the death sentence raised serious concerns about proportional justice, the protection of vulnerable citizens, and the sanctity of human life.

The association recalled that faith-based organisations, civil society groups, and concerned Nigerians had repeatedly appealed for a review of the case, stressing the moral, legal, and humanitarian implications of executing a man who acted to preserve his own life.

Northern CAN stated that Governor Fintiri’s decision reflects exemplary leadership and a deep commitment to justice tempered with compassion.

It said the pardon has helped to calm public tension and restore confidence in the justice system, showing that government can listen and respond to legitimate public concerns.

The association further noted that the action sends a powerful message that Nigeria values life, fairness, and the protection of the innocent, while also underscoring the need for continual review of judicial outcomes, especially in cases involving capital punishment.

Northern CAN expressed profound appreciation to the governor for what it described as a bold and humane intervention and prayed for God’s wisdom and strength for him as he continues to lead the state.

The association also urged other leaders at all levels of government to emulate Governor Fintiri’s example by upholding justice, peace, and the dignity of every human life.
