The Nigerian sports community has been plunged into mourning following the death of former Nigeria Football Association (now Nigeria Football Federation) President, Alhaji Ibrahim Galadima, who passed away on Saturday in Kano at the age of 74.
Galadima, a revered sports administrator and former Patron of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), was widely regarded as a towering figure whose contributions significantly shaped the growth and governance of sports in Nigeria.
In a statement issued on behalf of the NOC and the Olympic Movement, NOC President Habu Ahmed Gumel expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing Galadima as a “principled visionary” who dedicated his life to the advancement of Nigerian sports.
Gumel noted that during his tenure as head of the Nigeria Football Federation, Galadima distinguished himself through his commitment to transparency and professionalism in football administration. He also credited the late administrator with playing a stabilizing role in promoting Olympic values across sporting federations.
He further highlighted Galadima’s enduring legacy in grassroots sports development in Kano State, describing it as a benchmark for regional sports management in the country.
“Ibrahim was a brother, a confidant, and a dependable ally in our collective quest to put Nigeria on the global sporting map. His exit leaves a vacuum that will be incredibly difficult to fill,” Gumel said.
Similarly, National President of the Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria, Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, expressed grief over Galadima’s passing, describing him as an astute administrator whose counsel and leadership would be sorely missed.
Gawuna, a former Deputy Governor of Kano State, said the loss extended beyond the state, noting that Galadima’s fatherly guidance and wealth of experience played a vital role in sports development nationwide.
In the same vein, YSFON National Secretary, Patrick Okpavuerhe, described the late administrator as a perfect gentleman who remained committed to grassroots football and consistently supported the federation’s initiatives.
“It’s saddening that we lost Alhaji Galadima at this time. He lived a fulfilled life and made meaningful contributions to sports development in Nigeria,” Okpavuerhe said.

Galadima served as NFA President between 2002 and 2006. His extensive career also included roles as Chairman of the Kano State Football Association (1977–1979), Executive Chairman of the Kano State Sports Council (1981–1983), and First Vice President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee.
He was also a member of the Presidential Monitoring Committee for Stadia Development for the FIFA World Youth Championship and served as Commissioner for Social Welfare, Youth and Sports in Kano State.
Meanwhile, the Authentic Nigeria Football and Allied Sports Supporters Club also expressed deep sorrow over his passing, describing it as a painful loss to Nigerian football and the wider sporting community.
In a statement, the supporters’ group hailed Galadima as a pillar of football administration whose tenure was marked by integrity, dedication, and an unwavering passion for the growth of the game. It noted that his efforts helped elevate Nigerian football on the continental and global stage, while laying structures that continue to support the sport’s development.
The group added that his leadership, wisdom, and calm disposition inspired many within the football community, stressing that his legacy would endure through the progress he helped establish.
The club further noted that Galadima’s influence extended beyond boardroom decisions, as he remained a unifying figure who consistently advocated for harmony among stakeholders in Nigerian football. His ability to build consensus and promote dialogue earned him widespread respect across different generations of administrators and supporters alike.
ANFASSC also emphasized that his unwavering belief in the power of football as a tool for national unity and youth development was evident throughout his career. According to the club, Galadima’s support for initiatives aimed at discovering and nurturing young talents helped lay a solid foundation for the future of the sport in Nigeria.
The supporters’ body called on current football administrators to uphold the values of integrity, transparency, and selfless service which the late Galadima represented, stressing that preserving his ideals would be the greatest tribute to his memory.
They concluded by urging the Nigerian football family to remain united in this moment of grief, while drawing inspiration from Galadima’s life of service and commitment to the growth of the game.
