The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) has inaugurated its newly reconstituted Technical and Development Commission, marking what officials described as a significant milestone in advancing the nation’s Olympic Movement.

The virtual ceremony took place on October 28, 2025.

Delivering the keynote address, NOC President Engr. Habu Ahmed Gumel, OON, FNSE, FNIM, hailed the event as an “epoch-making” moment and a “giant stride” toward fulfilling the Committee’s strategic objectives.

Addressing Executive Committee members, commission appointees, and journalists who joined the online ceremony, Engr. Gumel emphasized the necessity of establishing such commissions, noting that they are integral to the framework of the International Olympic Charter and the NOC Statutes.

“These commissions serve as advisory bodies responsible for promoting Olympic values and implementing the movement’s core objectives,” he explained.

Gumel also underscored the inclusive process adopted in selecting members, highlighting the broad representation from various national federations and sports stakeholders.

“The appointments were made based on personal merit and contributions to our sports development goals,” he said, adding that the roles constitute a “voluntary and sacrificial service to our fatherland.”

While acknowledging the voluntary nature of the service, Gumel assured members of the NOC’s full commitment to supporting the commission’s programs and initiatives.

The Technical and Sport Commission will be chaired by Retired Navy Commodore Omatseye Netsama (Rtd). Other members include Mr. Mohammed Isa, Lt. Col. G. Bello, Prof. Ebenezer Morakinyo, Dr. Kweku Tandoh, Mr. Tunde Kazeem, Mr. Daniel Ademola, CSP Kalu Chijoke Erem, and Engr. Jackson Samuel.

Gumel confirmed that the commission has already received its Terms of Reference (ToR) and will be supported administratively by the NOC Secretariat.

Declaring the commission officially inaugurated, the NOC President urged members to begin work immediately and to leverage digital platforms for meetings and collaborations.

“The Executive Committee and the NOC Secretariat will closely monitor and assess your performance,” Gumel stated.
