Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has handed over three rehabilitated wards with a 100-bed capacity at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi (NOHIL).

In his keynote address, the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of NNPCL, Bashir Bayo Ojulari, represented by the Chief Financial Officer, Mr. Adedapo Segun emphasised that NNPC’s value extends beyond oil production to meaningful contributions to national development through its foundation.

“True value is not measured only in the barrels of oil produced, but in lives impacted,” he stated, highlighting the company’s deliberate strategy to institutionalise corporate social responsibility (CSR) as a core commitment to its over 200 million Nigerian stakeholders.

The intervention targeted critical sections of the 80-year-old facility, renovating the three wards to modern standards with a combined capacity of 102 beds. The project, completed in 12 months, aims to provide a better healing environment for patients and enhance overall service delivery at the hospital, which is one of Nigeria’s foremost orthopaedic centres.

Ojulari noted that the rehabilitation addresses some of the pressing challenges in Nigeria’s health sector, including dilapidated infrastructure and aligns with NNPC’s broader mandate to deliver sustainable social investments alongside its core business of ramping up crude oil production, optimising gas resources and revamping refineries.

He reaffirmed NNPCL’s resolve to create measurable impact across all six geopolitical zones, including youth empowerment, support for food security through farmer capacity building and infrastructural projects like the one at Igbobi hospital.

In her address, Executive Vice President, Business Services, NNPCL, Mrs Sophia Mbakwe, described the project as another profound statement by the company in its social interventions, “touching lives positively, restoring hope and renewing dignity.”

She emphasised that the rehabilitation underscores the company’s commitment to going beyond its core energy mandate to contribute meaningfully to national development through strategic and sustainable CSR initiatives.

She highlighted the company’s broader CSR footprint, which now operates primarily through the Foundation. Focus areas include health, education, environment, agriculture, youth empowerment and humanitarian support, all aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles.

She commended the management and staff of the National Orthopaedic Hospital for their dedication, stating that the institution’s commitment to service made the handover possible.

Dignitaries at the event included the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Ali represented by the Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre, Ebute Meta; the Oba of Shomolu represented by the Bale of Bajulaye; the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Wakeel Lawal and management of the hospital.
