The 2025 Nigeria National League (NNL) kicked off in Lafia, Nasarawa State, with Basira Football Club of Lafia recording an impressive 3–1 victory over Mighty Jets of Jos, Plateau State, in the season’s opening encounter.

The game, played at the Lafia City Stadium on Saturday, saw Basira FC’s Abubakar Yusuf put his side ahead in the 6th minute, while Cartie Don doubled the lead with a brilliant solo goal in the 39th minute, sealing the win before halftime.

Governor of Nasarawa State, Engr. Abdullahi Sule, who declared the competition open and performed the official kick-off, commended the organisers and reiterated his administration’s commitment to promoting sports as a tool for youth development and unity.

Speaking with journalists after the match, Mighty Jets’ Head Coach, Ere Dokubo, admitted that his team was unsettled by the early goal and could not recover in time to change the outcome.

“The early goal was an issue for us, but we have time to re-strategise. It’s still a long season, and I believe we will improve in our next games. We didn’t expect Basira FC to win, but that’s football,” Dokubo said.

On his part, Basira FC’s Head Coach, Aminu Musa, expressed joy over the victory, describing it as a morale booster for his players in their debut NNL appearance.

“It was a fifty-fifty match, and winning our first game gives us great encouragement. I’m happy with the boys’ performance, and I thank our fans who came out in large numbers to support us. I also appreciate the governor for gracing the occasion,” he stated.

Chairman of Basira United, Salisu Galadima, lauded the team’s performance, noting that the victory was a reflection of the hard work and commitment invested in the club’s preparation.

“We are proud of this result. The players have shown that hard work pays. This win means a lot, not just for the club but for the people of Nasarawa State,” Galadima said.

“I also want to thank Governor Abdullahi Sule for his continuous support of sports and youth development. His presence at the kick-off shows his genuine interest in football growth at the grassroots.”

Abubakar Yusuf, who scored the opening goal and was named Man of the Match, dedicated his performance to God. “I thank God for giving me the strength and opportunity to score today. I dedicate these goals to Him. It feels great to help my team start the season with a victory,” he said.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Nigeria National League (NNL), George Aluo, commended the Nasarawa State Government for hosting the competition, describing Governor Sule as a “sports-loving leader.”

“This is the second time we are coming to Nasarawa State, and we appreciate the governor for providing the platform and ensuring a smooth start to the season. He has made us understand that the truth should always be supported,” Aluo stated.

He disclosed that four clubs would compete in a Super Four tournament to determine the eventual winner of the 2025 NNL season, adding that the match was scheduled for 3 p.m. to ensure adequate security and convenience for fans.
