The Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) has announced a lineup of activities to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the nation’s country code domain, .ng, alongside the 8th edition of the .ng Awards slated for December 2, 2025.
The celebration, themed “20 Years, One Identity: Powering Nigeria with .ng,” highlights the pivotal role the .ng domain has played in building Nigeria’s digital identity, enhancing cybersecurity, and promoting local content over the past two decades.
Since its inception, NiRA has driven the growth of the .ng domain from a technical internet resource to a symbol of national digital sovereignty. The domain now serves as a trusted platform for businesses, institutions, startups, and creators seeking global visibility anchored in local identity.
NiRA President, Adesola Akinsanya, described the anniversary as a testament to Nigeria’s evolving digital confidence, noting that the .ng domain has become an enabler of economic opportunity and innovation.
A central feature of the anniversary will be the 8th .ng Awards, where more than 40 businesses, institutions, and individuals will be recognised for outstanding contributions to Nigeria’s digital ecosystem through effective use of the .ng domain.
According to the Chairman of the anniversary planning committee, Peter Oluka, this year’s awards carry added significance as they coincide with the two-decade milestone of Nigeria’s digital identity evolution.
As part of its anniversary activities, NiRA will also hold a nationwide community walk to create awareness on digital identity, cybersecurity, and the economic value of hosting locally. Additionally, the association will support 20 secondary schools with digital infrastructure and school-branded .ng domains to promote digital literacy and e-learning among young Nigerians.
NiRA’s Chief Operating Officer, Oluwaseyi Onasanya, said the outreach efforts underscore the association’s commitment to inclusive digital development and empowering the next generation.
To further mark the milestone, NiRA will launch a book and documentary chronicling Nigeria’s internet evolution, the adoption of the .ng domain, and the contributions of key pioneers in shaping the country’s digital landscape. The publication is expected to serve as a national archive for future generations.
As Nigeria intensifies its transition to a digitally driven economy, NiRA reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening local content, enhancing domain infrastructure, and positioning .ng as the trusted home for the nation’s digital identity.
