The Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR), in partnership with the Health Writers Association of Nigeria (HEWAN) and Roche, has reiterated its commitment to strengthening health journalism in Nigeria. This commitment was underscored at a workshop held in Lagos to build the capacity of health reporters and commemorate the 2025 Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The workshop, themed: “Elevating Science and Health Journalism,” brought together journalists, researchers, health professionals, and policy advocates to discuss practical strategies for improving the depth, accuracy, and impact of health coverage in Nigeria.

Delivering his remarks, the Director General, NIMR, Prof. John Obafunwa, described the event as a timely intervention aimed at improving the quality and integrity of health and science reporting in the country. He noted that accurate health journalism is central to advancing public health, shaping effective policies, and empowering citizens to make informed decisions.

“This gathering represents a shared commitment to elevating the quality, integrity, and public value of health journalism. The clarity and accountability of health reporting have a direct impact on public outcomes from individual health choices to national health strategies. We must ensure that Nigerians have access to trustworthy health information that guides their lives and strengthens our health systems.”

The Director General, who joined the event virtually, commended HEWAN for its continued efforts to promote credible health reporting and praised Roche for supporting initiatives that improve access to reliable health information. He urged journalists to uphold the highest standards of accuracy, ethics, and responsibility in their reporting, emphasising that the media plays a vital role in bridging the gap between scientific research, policy formulation, and community health.

In her welcome address, the President of HEWAN, Mrs. Vivian Ihechu, expressed gratitude to NIMR and Roche for their partnership in hosting the workshop. She explained that the event served a dual purpose enhancing the skills of health reporters and raising awareness about breast cancer, a disease that continues to affect thousands of Nigerian women each year.

“Journalism is not just about reporting facts; it’s about saving lives. As journalists, we must go beyond statistics to tell stories that encourage early detection, promote equitable access to care, and dispel myths that hinder timely intervention.”

She reaffirmed HEWAN’s commitment to ensuring that Nigerian journalists are better equipped to report on medical and scientific developments with precision and empathy. She called on the media to use their platforms to drive awareness and advocacy that can lead to improved health outcomes nationwide.

Participants resolved to strengthen collaborations between the media and research institutions to ensure that scientific findings are effectively communicated to the public in ways that inspire trust, action, and hope.

The event also reinforced the importance of sustained awareness campaigns against breast cancer, with stakeholders calling for increased education on early screening, prevention, and treatment access to reduce mortality rates among Nigerian women.
