The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a three-day weather outlook warning of widespread dust haze and reduced visibility across the northern parts of the country, with prospects of isolated thunderstorms in several southern states.

In a forecast released by NiMet’s Central Forecast Office, valid from 12:00 a.m. (UTC) on Wednesday, 29 January, to 11:59 p.m. (UTC) on Friday, 31 January 2026, the agency said dust particles would remain in suspension, posing health and safety concerns.

NiMet projected moderate dust haze across the northern region throughout the three-day period, with horizontal visibility ranging between 2 and 5 kilometres.

The agency warned that parts of Borno, Yobe, Katsina, Bauchi, Kano, Jigawa, Gombe and Kaduna states may experience localised visibility of less than or equal to 1,000 metres, especially on 29 and 30 January.

For the North Central states, moderate dust haze with visibility of 2 to 5 kilometres is expected on 29 and 30 January, while slight dust haze is anticipated on 31 January.

Sunny and hazy conditions are also forecast over parts of Kogi and Kwara.

NiMet said the southern region would generally experience sunny skies with few patches of cloud.

However, there are slim to slight chances of isolated thunderstorms with light rainfall, particularly in the afternoon and evening hours.

States likely to be affected include Ogun, Lagos, Ondo, Edo, Bayelsa, Rivers, Delta, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Abia and Imo.

NiMet advised the public to take precautions due to suspended dust particles, warning that people with asthma and other respiratory conditions should be particularly cautious.

Motorists were also urged to drive carefully, especially during rainfall.

Airline operators were advised to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for effective flight planning, while residents were encouraged to stay updated through official weather bulletins.
