Legendary Nigerian juju musician King Sunny Adé held Nigeria’s longest-standing Billboard 200 album record for about 40 years before it was broken in 2023, the US Mission Nigeria has disclosed.
The mission made the disclosure on Thursday in a post on X as part of its #ThisWeekinUSNigeriaHistory series, highlighting milestones that have shaped the cultural relationship between Nigeria and the United States.
King Sunny Adé achieved the feat in 1983 with his acclaimed album Jùjú Music, which spent 29 weeks on the Billboard 200, one of the world’s most influential music charts.
The achievement made Jùjú Music the longest-charting album by a Nigerian artiste on the Billboard 200, a record that remained unbroken for roughly four decades.
The feat was particularly significant because it came long before the global explosion of Afrobeats, when Nigerian musicians were still largely seeking international recognition through traditional and contemporary sounds.

According to the US Mission, King Sunny Adé’s distinctive juju music helped introduce a wider American audience to Nigeria’s rich musical creativity and demonstrated the ability of Nigerian sounds to travel beyond the African continent.
“American audiences have long embraced the creativity and innovation coming from Nigeria,” the mission said.
The mission also asked its followers to identify the Nigerian album that eventually ended King Sunny Adé’s long-standing Billboard record in 2023.
The record was finally surpassed as Nigerian music entered a new era of unprecedented international growth, with a younger generation of artistes driving Afrobeats into major global markets.
King Sunny Adé’s 1983 achievement nevertheless remains a landmark in Nigeria’s music history, marking an international breakthrough decades before the country’s current dominance of the global Afrobeats scene.
