The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has taken a bold step toward sustainability with the deployment of electric vehicles (EVs) for airside operations across Nigeria’s five international airports, which are Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Port Harcourt, and Enugu.

The initiative marked the first deployment of EVs in Nigeria’s aviation sector, positioning NiMet at the forefront of environmental transformation and operational efficiency.

According to the NiMet’s Director General and Chief Executive Officer, Professor Charles Anosike, the introduction of electric vehicles aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which emphasises clean energy adoption and climate resilience.

Each of the selected airports would have dedicated charging stations to support the vehicles, which are capable of covering up to 200 kilometres on a single charge.

NiMet said the transition to EVs would enhance its airside operations by reducing fuel dependency, minimising emissions, and lowering operational costs.

The move is also expected to improve efficiency in logistics, reduce downtime caused by fuel shortages, and create a quieter, more eco-friendly working environment.

“The adoption of electric vehicles will enable us to deliver more reliable and energy-efficient services while contributing to Nigeria’s climate action goals,” the agency stated.

The agency explained that beyond environmental benefits, the EVs would help optimise resources, allowing NiMet to invest more in its core functions include weather forecasting, climate monitoring, and aviation safety.

The agency further described the milestone as part of the agency’s commitment to sustainable innovation and operational excellence.

“Under this administration, NiMet is committed to driving green growth and environmental responsibility through innovation,” he said, noting that the agency would continue to champion initiatives that support Nigeria’s transition to cleaner energy and global sustainability standards.
