NIMC boosts security measures amid rising threats to citizens’ data

From Adanna Nnamani, Abuja

In response to escalating cybersecurity risks, the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) says it has intensified efforts to safeguard citizens’ data, by instituting stringent security measures aimed at fortifying its National Identity Database against potential breaches.

This was disclosed in a statement issued by NIMC Spokesperson, Mr Kayode Adegoke, over the weekend.

Adegoke said that the Commission, led by its current Director-General and Chief Executive, Engr Abisoye Coker-Odusote, has collaborated with security agencies to ensure stringent data protection measures and regulatory adherence.

Additionally, all Licensed Verification Agents, Front End Partners (FEPs), and Diaspora FEPs are undergoing thorough security screening as part of NIMC’s comprehensive security enhancement strategy.

This initiative, he explained, seeks to uphold global best practices in identity management and will impose sanctions on any entity found flouting regulations.

In response to escalating online phishing threats targeting citizens’ data, Adegoke mentioned that NIMC has empowered law enforcement agencies to take action against those involved.

He said that the Commission has received numerous reports of fraudulent platforms coercing Nigerians into divulging personal information for National Identification Number (NIN) modification or enrollment services, adding that perpetrators will face prosecution under the full extent of the law.

The Spokesperson also mentioned that NIMC has suspended the bypass enrollment process to prevent potential misuse and address irregularities. The Commission assured the public that updates regarding the reinstatement of this procedure would be provided, while emphasising NIMC’s unwavering dedication to data security.

“NIMC reaffirms its commitment to providing secure identity services and protecting the citizens’ data per its mandate as Nigeria’s foundational identity provider,” he said.
