The United States Mission in Nigeria has warned that visa overstays by Nigerian travellers could have wider implications for other citizens seeking entry into the U.S.

In an advisory issued on Monday, the mission stressed that compliance with U.S. immigration laws is critical to preserving travel opportunities for Nigerians visiting for education, business, tourism and family purposes.

It noted that when travellers overstay their visas or breach entry conditions, it can affect how future applications from the same country are assessed.

“Visa overstays by Nigerian travellers can affect opportunities for their fellow citizens,” the mission said.

“Strengthening compliance helps protect access for students, business travellers, and families who travel responsibly.”

The U.S. Mission also raised concerns over visa fraud and misuse of travel documents, describing them as serious offences that undermine the integrity of the immigration system.

It urged Nigerians with credible information about visa fraud to report such cases through official consular fraud prevention channels.

The mission reaffirmed its commitment to supporting safe, lawful and orderly travel between Nigeria and the United States, while ensuring that compliant travellers are not disadvantaged by the actions of a few.
