Nigerian track stars open 2024 season on high

Nigerian track and field athletes studying in the US opened their 2024 season at the Stan Scott Memorial indoor track and field meet over the weekend.

Temitope Adeshina, who made her collegiate debut for Texas Tech, won the women’s high jump with a leap of 1.83m. Erhire Best finished 2ndin the men’s Triple Jump with 15.52m, while Onaara Obamuwagun won the women’s jump with 12.86m and Joseph Edafiadhe finished tops in the men’s long jump with 7.51m.

At the same meet, Success Umukoro ran her first race of the season for Texas Tech in the women’s 60m finishing second with a Personal Record (PR) time of 7.30s while Joy Udo Gabriel finished 3rd with 7.37s.

Mercy Umoibang running for Texas Tech Track & Field and Cross Country finished 3rd overall ahead of her compatriot, Sule Rejoice in the same heat with 24.15s.

More Nigerian stars were in action at the Leonard Hilton Invitational with Miracle Thompson winning the women’s 60m hurdles.

Thompson, a Freshman for Houston Cougars, breezed to a time of 8.38s dusting Kaitlin Smith who came 2nd with 8.45s, while Dyandra Gray finished 3rd with 8.48s.

The open meet included teams apart from NCAA Division I, II and NJCAA.  Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, University of Texas at El Paso, New Mexico State, New Mexico Junior College and host school Texas Tech went up against the Buffs and Lady Buffs.
