The Nigerian Navy on Thursday, commenced Operation Awkward 2026, a harbor-defence exercise led by the Western Naval Command (WNC), aimed at testing operational readiness and strengthening Nigeria’s maritime security framework.
The exercise which was flagged off onboard NNS KADA in Apapa, Lagos, was designed to assess the preparedness of personnel and equipment, identify operational gaps, and refine strategies, tactics, and procedures essential for defending Nigeria’s maritime domain.
Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command (WNC), Rear Admiral Abdullahi Abubakar Mustapha, stated that exercises like Operation Awkward provide a realistic environment to evaluate the Navy’s response capabilities in harbour settings, which host strategic infrastructure and economic assets.
He emphasised that lessons from the exercise would help recalibrate operational strategies, improve tactical coordination, and enhance overall readiness across the command. Rear Admiral Mustapha also highlighted growing international interest in joint training with the Nigerian Navy, citing the service’s professionalism and its global ranking among the top 22 navies.
Operation Awkward 2026 focuses on harbour-defence operations across channels, terminals, and adjoining maritime infrastructure within the command’s area of responsibility. Activities include coordinated boat operations from Apapa, Tarkwa Bay, and Badagry, extending to the fairway buoy.
The Flag Officer Commanding charged officers and ratings to maintain the highest standards of discipline, professionalism, and tactical proficiency, while using the exercise to identify and close any readiness gaps.
Commander of NNS BEECROFT, Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, added that the drills were vital for rehearsing procedures, validating communication channels, and reinforcing the security framework protecting ships, installations, and personnel.
