The Federal Government yesterday expressed disappointment over the decision by President Donald Trump to pull the U.S. out of the Paris climate agreement.
Spokesperson, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Clement Aduku, in a statement, restated Nigeria’s commitment to the accord: “The Paris climate deal was intended for the common good of humanity and benefit of our planet.
“Therefore, Nigeria, alongside other countries, which are signatories to the Paris Climate Accord, shall continue to implement her commitment under the Paris Climate Agreement.
“This is reasonable and in line with our President’s commitment to the accord.”
The Paris Climate Change Agreement is an agreement within the UN Framework Convention on climate change dealing with greenhouse gas emissions mitigation, adaptation and finance.
The agreement entered into force on November 4, 2016, with 197 parties.
President Muhammadu Buhari signed the agreement in 2016 in New York, thus making Nigeria the 146th country to endorse it.
Nigeria, in March 2017, ratified it and became the latest country to ratify the agreement that aimed to avoid the most devastating effects of climate change by cutting carbon emissions.
Trump had on Thursday confirmed that he would withdraw his country from the Paris Climate Agreement.
