Provost of the National Defence College (NDC), Abuja, Adam Ahmed, has said hunger is part of human in all epochs, but the current Nigeria’s variant is weaponised and politicised.
This was even as he said Nigeria is facing toxic challenges that manifest themselves in kidnapping, banditry, unprovoked massive killings, terrorism, insurgencies, piracy, human trafficking and sleaze-bag.
Ahmed stated this while delivering a lecture entitled: ‘Ramadhan: Coping with the Current Challenges’, organised by the Al-Habibiyyah Islamic Society in Abuja.
“Nigeria was a country of plenty, boozing and excesses. It had Udoji when it did not know how to spend its excess wealth and materiality. It imported all it needed in both desires, wants and greeds,” he said.
Represented by Ismail Zakeri, senior research fellow at the Centre for Strategic Research and Strategies, NDC, Ahmed said the world is literally in turmoil.
He said apart from a few countries, the continent of Africa is almost a failure when one considers banditry and terrorism in the Sahel region that is trying to swallow the nations of Africa.
Ahmed stated that famine, drought, scarcity of food, coup d’état, leadership failures were noticeable in most African countries.
Ahmed said: “But these are ‘seriously demented’ in the face of strange but curious high levels of ravaging hunger in the midst of available plenty of foodstuff, leadership ineptitude, greed and avarice in all tiers of governance. So serious and acute are these vices that they are in cornubative challenges of the socio-economic and administrative systems of the country.
In his remarks, the National Chief Imam of Al-Habibiyyah Islamic Society, Fuad Adeyemi, appealed for financial assistance for the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the country.
Adeyemi told the audience that the Al-Habibiyyah Islamic Society, recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to raise N1 billion between now and June for IDPs in the country.
Adeyemi assured that from all indications, in the next two months, the funds will be realised.
