The governorship candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Cross River State, Amb. Wilfred Bonse, has promised to provide 18,000 scholarships to tertiary indigent students if elected.
Briefing newsmen on Monday in Calabar on his campaign programmes, Bonse disclosed that his team had already secured through their international partnership network a very robust scholarship arrangement for deserving students of Cross River State.
According to him, the scholarship programme opportunity will be evenly spread across all the local government areas of the state with 1,000 students per local government area (LGA) benefiting from the programme.
Explaining that the scholarship programme would benefit all students in tertiary institutions without discrimination, NNPP standard bearer said he is an advocate for good and qualitative education.
According to him, “the only way to attain advancement for the state and the country at large is through education, especially science and technology. I will, therefore, ensure that students are given all the material support to ease their schooling experience.
“The destination university is Weldios University in Benin Republic where the scholarships arrangements have been perfected for 18,000 students from the state.
“The programme has been paid for fully, and no dime needs to be paid by the parents or guardians of these deserving students.
“It is verifiable. It is authentic and not a campaign stint. Otherwise, we would have talked about 100, 200, or 300 persons.
“So, each local government is eligible to field 1,000 students for this opportunity and they can read all the different fields available in the university for a four-year duration at no cost to them”.
He noted that once the students qualify and are given admission, the campaign organisation would synchronise and provide stipend for the students to go to school with as well as provide bursary for them to be sustained through school for the period of study.
“This is our little token towards unburdening the educational institutions which are already grappling with poor infrastructure for sound and qualitative education in the state.
Decrying the current state of teachers poor pay, he promised to deal with the root causes holistically if given a chance to govern the state.
“More attention will be given to the teaching of science and technical subjects in secondary schools to have more students in the state qualify for admission to study science-related courses in foreign universities.”
The NNPP governorship candidate is on the last lap of his campaigns across the state.
