The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has told the United States President, Donald Trump, that Nigeria is committed to religious freedom.
Speaking at a press conference in Berlin, he made reference to a document to back up his submission.
The document, according to the minister, stipulated what the Nigerian constitution says about religious freedom in the country.
Tuggar, the immediate past Nigerian Ambassador to Germany, said: “Well, I will react by showing you what we have. I think the document that we came up with is what I want to show her. What we’ve done is we’ve articulated what our Constitution says about religious freedom, what our federal laws say about religious freedom and Nigeria’s constitutional commitment to religious freedom and rule of law.”
Speaking further, he told Trump not to create another Sudan in Nigeria as a result of pseudo allegations of religious discrimination.

He warned that irresponsible statements from personalities in the category of Trump may instigate divisions across Africa.
He stated that such a scenario led to sectarian and ethnic manipulation, which led to the crisis Sudan had been battling to overcome.
He further said that the legal system in the country does not allow any level of government to endorse persecution of anyone based on his belief.
“This is what guides us and this is what shows it’s impossible for there to be a religious persecution that can be supported in any way, shape or form by the government of Nigeria at any level,” he added.
He also said Nigeria, being a heterogeneous country, should not be taken to mean that the country is divided.
He explained that Nigeria is a country of 230 million, the largest democracy and country in Africa, warning that religion and ethnicity should not be hidden under political disguise to destroy the country.
