In a bid to actualize its independent power generation, the Niger State government says it will convert the famous Gurara Water all to hydroelectric dam.
The state Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago disclosed this in Gawu Babangida, headquarters of Gurara Local Government Area, when he met with key stakeholders and members of the council in continuation of his statewide projects monitoring tour.
He stated that the project, when completed the local government area will be included among the electricity generating councils in the state and will enhance the economic activities of the people and provide employment for the youths in the area.
It could be recalled that its quest to ensure stable power supply in the state and reposition the state towards economic growth, the government recently took a historic step by signing the Niger State Electricity Bill into law, to facilitate the establishment of the Niger State Electricity Regulatory Commission aimed at operating an independent power plant to guarantee steady power supply for economic growth.
The governor signed the “The Niger State Power Sector Law 2024” at the Council Chamber of the Government House, Minna last week, and took effect from the 19th of December 2024.
The law provides for the establishment of the “Niger State Electricity Regulatory Commission, Niger State Electricity Company and Niger State Electricity Agency.
However, the Governor, while addressing the stakeholders, observed that Gurara local government is a priority area considering its potentials, adding that his administration would ensure they are fully harnessed for the good of the people.
He enumerated some projects to be executed in the local government in addition to the ongoing township road to include a five-kilometer road in Izom, the abandoned 45-kilometer road to connect Izom to Gwagwalada, in the Federal Capital Territory and the construction of Gurara games resort.
Others are the N120 million trailers park to ease traffic on the ever-busy Minna-Suleja road, provision of potable water through partnership and a green energy park under a tripartite arrangement among others.
The Deputy Speaker, Niger State House of Assembly, Afiniki Dauda, and the Council Chairman, Abdul-Halim Abubakar in their separate remarks thanked the governor for his visit to the council area and the various meaningful ongoing projects in the area.
