In a bid to clarify its stance on recent political events in Nigeria, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has reiterated its commitment to neutrality.

This comes after President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, suspending Governor Siminalayi Fubara and other elected officials due to ongoing political instability.

The NGF, comprising governors from different political platforms, emphasized its role as an umbrella body for subnational governments, which aims to promote unified policy positions and collaborate with stakeholders for sustainable socioeconomic growth and the well-being of the people.

The Forum’s Director General, Abdulateef Shittu, explained that taking positions on contentious partisan issues would reflect a poor understanding of history, given the Forum’s past divisions.

The NGF is known for its bold stances on governance and policy matters such as wages, taxes, education, and healthcare.

It has called for public understanding, expressing confidence that appropriate crisis management mechanisms will address partisan issues.
