NFSAN marks Girl Child Day in Akure

…reaffirms commitment to girls’ education

The National Female Students Association of Nigeria (NFSAN) has commemorated the International Day of the Girl Child in Akure, Ondo State, with a call for sustained investment in the education and empowerment of Nigerian girls.

The event, organised by the Office of the National Vice President, Comrade Goodness Oyeleye, was held on Thursday at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) Multipurpose Hall.

The celebration, themed “Motivating the Nigerian Girl; Celebrating the Present, Inspiring the Future,” focused on the need to educate, empower, protect and create opportunities for girls to realise their full potential.

According to NFSAN, the programme was aimed at promoting the welfare, educational advancement, leadership development and overall wellbeing of female students across Nigeria, while encouraging young girls to embrace their abilities and pursue their aspirations despite societal and economic barriers.

As part of the commemoration, sanitary pads and notebooks were distributed to support the personal hygiene and educational needs of the girls.

Speaking at the event, the National Vice President, Comrade Goodness Oyeleye, said every girl deserves access to quality education, a safe environment and opportunities to grow into a confident and productive member of society.

She called on government institutions, corporate organisations, development partners and well-meaning Nigerians to intensify efforts towards tackling challenges such as child marriage, gender-based discrimination, inadequate educational resources and other barriers to girls’ advancement.

Oyeleye noted that celebrating the girl child must go beyond annual commemorations to include deliberate and sustainable actions that improve her access to education, healthcare, mentorship and leadership opportunities.

She expressed appreciation to speakers, guests and supporters who contributed to the success of the event.

NFSAN reiterated its resolve to continue advocating for female students and promoting initiatives that strengthen girls’ confidence, encourage educational achievement and prepare them for leadership roles.

The celebration ended with a renewed call for collective action to build a society where every Nigerian girl is educated, protected, valued and empowered.
