Urge Supreme Court to uphold justice in election dispute

From Abel Leonard, Lafia

A group of determined women staged an impassioned all-night protest in Lafia, the capital of Nasarawa State, rallying against the ongoing dispute concerning the state’s governorship election now in the hands of the Supreme Court.

Expressing their discontent over the alleged injustice faced by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, David Ombugadu, the women gathered on Monday night, engaging in fervent prayers that persisted until the break of dawn on Tuesday.

Hannatu John, a coordinator, emphasized the unwavering determination of the women, highlighting their relentless efforts in organizing rallies, protests, and now, a vigil seeking divine intervention in the impending Supreme Court judgment.

In her words, she stated, “The night vigil, named ‘Operation take back Nasarawa State,’ was a solemn and powerful assembly. Women from every corner of the state united, lighting candles and offering prayers for their cause. Each candle symbolized a light snuffed out due to the unfair election outcome.”

Continuing, she expressed their fervor, “With determination, we cast the lit candles into a burning fire, symbolizing our desire to see those who benefited from the injustice burn themselves into ashes. The growing intensity of the flame represented the birth of a new Nasarawa State, burning collectively for justice and a brighter future.”

Highlighting their anticipation of the Supreme Court ruling, she articulated, “Our hope and prayer rest on the impending Supreme Court judgment, believing it will rectify the past injustices. We are confident in the triumph of truth, that David Emmanuel Ombugadu will rightfully be declared the winner of the March 18th gubernatorial election.

“We will persist until justice is served and the rightful winner is acknowledged,” she asserted.

Recall that the State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal initially nullified Governor Abdullahi Sule’s victory of the All Progressives Congress on October 2, declaring Ombugadu of the PDP as the victor. However, dissatisfied with this judgment, Sule pursued the case at the Court of Appeal, where he was subsequently declared the winner of the state’s governorship election.

The women’s determined stand signifies a fervent belief in justice prevailing and their unwavering support for David Emmanuel Ombugadu’s rightful recognition as the winner of the election.
