Tinubu swears in Darma as Housing Minister, vows rapid reforms

From Isaac Anumihe, Abuja

The new Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Muttaga Rabe Darma, today, read a riot act against those that planned to sabotage his administration.

Darma, who reported to office at 3pm today, promised to take all the workers along in his programme but would not spare saboteurs among them.

“I will not allow anyone to be a step ahead to my success. Anyone that thinks he or she wants to sabotage our efforts to succeed will certainly clear the way for us” he warned.

The minister sought the co-operation of all the staff saying that as a team, he is only a captain of the ship and he was ready to take instructions and advice from others

“We are team players. So, each and every member of this team is as important as the other.

“And I want to let you know that each and every member of this team can always approach me one way or another.

“As the team head, (that is the captain), we will meet to discuss the good, the bad, the ugly, and the beautiful. As long as it is about moving the ministry forward, I will be open to all and will listen to everyone that has ideas” he assured.

Earlier, the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Yusuf Abdullahi Ata had listed the achievements of the past administration which include, the implementation of the Renewed Hope Programme across 17 states.

“It indicates a key role for the ministry to create a sustainable development plan and improve the overall development of modern housing for the community across 17 states” the minister, noted.

He said that the ministry had developed a large-scale housing development across Lagos, Kano and other states, so enabling them to generate over 300,000 direct and indirect jobs—engaging professionals, artisans, suppliers and service providers across the value chain.

The last administration accelerated implementation of PVP-driven housing projects including Karsana in Abuja, Ibeju Lekki in Lagos and in Kano, which are at advanced stages and ready for commissioning—contributing significantly to national housing stock.

He said that his predecessor implemented the National Housing Programme which continues to drive grassroots employment across 35 states and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) supporting small and medium enterprises, local contractors, artisans, while strengthening local construction capacity.

His predecessor also moved for the advancement of centralised land repository management system, a flagship PVP initiative designed to digitise land records and administration; enhanced transparency, eliminated liturgies, and improved revenue generation as well as promoted building materials manufacturing hubs across six geopolitical zones to stimulate the development of local construction capacity.
