The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has condemned what it described as unethical practices by some tertiary institutions, accusing them of delaying or refusing to refund students whose tuition fees had already been paid before the Fund disbursed education loans.
In a public notice issued on Monday, NELFUND expressed concern over reports of arbitrary increases in tuition fees and other institutional charges by some institutions, warning that such actions undermine the objectives of the federal government’s student loan scheme.
The public notice, signed by the Director of Strategic Communications at NELFUND, Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, explained that the student loan scheme, introduced under the administration of President Bola Tinubu, was designed to eliminate financial barriers to higher education, not to impose additional burdens on students.

NELFUND, however, confirmed that it is already engaging the affected institutions and relevant authorities to ensure that eligible students receive refunds where tuition fees had been paid before the loan disbursements.
The agency also said it is working to ensure that institutional charges remain fair, transparent and consistent with the objectives of the student loan programme.
NELFUND reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the interests of Nigerian students and preserving the integrity of the education loan scheme, which it described as a landmark national intervention.
