The Federal Government has said the ongoing reconstruction of roads and bridges destroyed by the devastating September 2024 floods in Borno State will ease the hardship faced by residents and restore access to communities cut off by the disaster.
Minister of State for Regional Development, Uba Maigari Ahmadu, stated this on Tuesday in Maiduguri while rounding off a two-day inspection of projects being executed by the Northeast Development Commission (NEDC) across the state.
Ahmadu inspected the reconstruction of two major bridges at Fori-Gatimari and Mororo on the outskirts of Maiduguri, both of which were destroyed during the 2024 floods.
He said completion of the bridges and adjoining access roads would resolve the prolonged transportation difficulties experienced by residents and improve the movement of agricultural produce into the city.

“I want to commend the NEDC and the contractors, but I hope that when next we come here, this bridge would have been fully delivered and access roads would have also been completed to the benefit of residents around here,” he said.
The minister noted that the bridges were important links to Maiduguri city centre and were also used by farmers and traders transporting vegetables and other agricultural produce from communities on the outskirts.
He commended NEDC for the pace and quality of work, stressing that restoring critical infrastructure damaged by the floods was essential to rebuilding livelihoods and improving living conditions in the Northeast.
Ahmadu assured residents that the Federal Government would continue to support interventions aimed at rebuilding critical infrastructure and addressing the consequences of natural disasters across the region.
As part of the inspection tour, the minister also commissioned a fertility centre constructed by NEDC at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), describing the intervention as an important contribution to healthcare delivery in the region.
