The Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) has called for social dialogue to address the rift between the federal government and the Organised Labour over the issue of economic hardship in the country.
NECA made the plea when it met with other stakeholders on Tuesday in Abuja to discuss strategies for advancing equitable and impartial resolution of labour disputes as well as cultivating amicable employer-employee relations.
The parties also discussed how best to maintain their common goal of promoting a forward-thinking and productive labour environment.
The forum themed: Strengthening Tripartism and Social Dialogue (including Alternative Dispute Resolution Mechanisms) for a Sustainable Industrial Relations System in Nigeria, had in attendance top shots in the labour force.
In his welcome speech, NECA President, Taiwo Adeniyi, stated that social dialogues and alternative dispute resolution procedures (such as mediation, adjudication, or arbitration) have been recognised by both domestic and international labour organisations as essential to preserving harmony within the industry.
Adeniyi asserted that the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and labour laws uphold the ideals of impartiality, transparency, and adherence to legal frameworks, which form the foundation of these systems.
He harped on the need for employers and employees along with government to consistently engage in social dialogue to improve Industrial harmony in the country
“We believe that this Forum will provide a conducive environment for meaningful discussions by our experts from the academia, public and private sectors to share their perspectives on the importance of dispute resolution mechanisms that uphold the rights and welfare of workers while supporting sustainable development and growth for businesses.
“As the President of NECA, I assure you of Employers’ unwavering commitment to promoting a peaceful and harmonious industrial relations environment. We firmly believe that maintaining a healthy employer-employee relationship is vital for fostering a thriving economy and creating a stable and prosperous nation,” he stated.
On her part, Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha hailed NECA’s collaboration with the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN) and other stakeholders which is aimed at addressing the pressing issues surrounding Labour Adjudication and Arbitration, fostering dialogue among stakeholders to promote peaceful industrial relations and enhance collaboration.
She said this forum provides invaluable insights and create momentum for the enhancement of our industrial relations framework.
According to Onyejeocha, the forum must collectively advance our efforts towards a more robust and equitable labour landscape.
“Participants, I urge you to approach the panel session with seriousness, recognizing the importance of social dialogue and tripartism in strengthening democracy, social justice, and sustainable economic development. Let’s engage in open dialogue to create comprehensive solutions.
“I hope this forum serves as a catalyst for transformative change, leading to enhanced Labour Adjudication and Arbitration processes aligned with the principles of fairness, equity, and justice as per ILO standards,” she stated.
