From Tony Osauzo, Benin
The Deputy Team Lead of the National Economic Council (NEC) Implementation Monitoring Committee (IMC), Busayo Awotunde, has commended the Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, for the reconstruction of the Oba Market, which was affected by fire in June 2020 and a subsequent fire outbreak in October 2025.
Okpebholo’s administration had embarked on the reconstruction of the market, equipping it with modern facilities that will positively affect the economic and commercial life of Edo people.
Speaking to journalists at the conference room of the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning at the Government Secretariat in Benin City, Awotunde said the team was in Edo for the purpose of visiting and tracking the level of implementation of NEC resolutions and legacy projects in the state.
“This is a monitoring exercise to look at how the Edo State Government has been able to align and implement the NEC resolution. We are aware that the state is doing a lot in terms of projects.
“We commend the governor for rebuilding the Oba Market, which was completely razed by fire. We are impressed with the job. We are here to determine the level of implementation of NEC resolution in Edo State and also to note the challenges faced.
“We will be visiting other legacy projects of the governor, and we appeal for cooperation and access to information to enable us achieve our aims and the government to showcase their achievements,” he explained.
Commissioner for Budget and Economic planning, Dr. Elizabeth Ebosele, said the government recognises that effective implementation of national economic policies and resolutions require strong coordination, prudent resources management, transparency and continuous monitoring.
“The government of senator Monday Okpebholo has remained committed to translating the government’s policies and programmes into tangible outcomes that improve the lives and livelihood of our people.
“This is an opportunity to showcase the progress recorded by Edo State, receive constructive feedback and identify areas where additional support and intergovernmental collaboration may be required.
“I commend the NEC under the chairmanship of the Vice President of Nigeria, Kashim Shettima and IMC for their continued efforts to strengthen implementation, accountability and coordination in our national development process,” she stated.
