People of Ndikelionwu community, Orumba North LGA Anambra State have sent a Save our Soul message to Governor Chukwuma Soludo appealing to him to order for the immediate withdrawal of the one year tenure extension of the Edozie Obasi led town union executives.
The community members who gathered at the St Margaret Anglican Church Field, Ndikelionwu yesterday, brandished various placards expressing their support for the Soludo administration and called on the governor to avert an imminent crisis in the community by allowing the members to elect their leaders in a free and fair contest.
They also marched to the Orumba North Local Government Area headquarters, Ajalli where they were received by the Mayor, Capt. Casmir Nwafor (Rtd) who promised to convey their grievances to Mr. Governor.
Speaking, the youth leader of the community, Comrade Alfred Robinson Obidigbo; the palace secretary, Fortune Ike; former Presidents general of the community, Chief Okechukwu Okereke; Village chief, Ezeogo Nwene Emmanuel and former Vice President of the Community , Chukwuemeka Nwankwo all said the community were prepared for an election to produce new set of town union leaders on 27th December 2025 following the expiration of the Obasi leadership after two tenures of three years each. Unfortunately, the election was botched following the inability of the outgoing executives to produce a comprehensive list of financial members of the community. And to reward such leadership with an extension is to them, unjustified.
They noted that the community was aghast when suddenly, a letter emanated from the Anambra State Commissioner for local government and Chieftaincy Matters, Hon. Tony-Collins Nwabunwanne and directed that the Obasi leadership tenure has been extended for another one year before the election of new executives can take place.
The community members said they were neither consulted nor briefed on the development before such action was taken noting that the tenure extension was not only unconstitutional but an imposition on the people of the community who are ready for the election of new set of leaders for the community to replace the regime that has become unpopular.
They called on the governor to avert imminent crisis in the community by directing the Commissioner to allow the conduct of a new election that will move the community forward before restiveness and unnecessary tension escalates in the community.
When contacted, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Tony-Collins Nwabunwanne said the extension of the Obasi leadership in the community is in the best interest of the community as the government wants the executive to oversee a pending government project being executed in the community until adequate arrangement for a new election is concluded and conducted.
