A group, Ndigbo Lagos, has expressed deepest shock and condemnation of the violent attack on soldiers at a military checkpoint in Obikabia Junction, Aba, Abia State, last Thursday, which resulted in the death of five soldiers.
The attackers also set military vehicles ablaze. The incident caused tension in Aba, with the Abia State government condemning the attack, while the military vowed to apprehend the perpetrators.
In a statement jointly signed by the President General and Secretary General of the group, Major General Obi Abel Umahi (retd) and Chief Chuma Igwe, respectively, Ndigbo Lagos described the incident as “a senseless act, which stands in stark contrast to the values cherished by Ndigbo, respect for law and order, and the sanctity of human life”.
The statement further read: “The motive behind the attack remains unclear, but it has caused significant anxiety and unease within the Aba community. The incident has a rippling effect, not just in Abia State, but across the Southeastern region. It has the potential to disrupt the fragile peace and security efforts underway in the region.
“Furthermore, it can discourage economic activities and stoke tensions between the military and civilians. Ndigbo Lagos extends its heartfelt condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers who died in the line of duty. We pray for their strength during this difficult time. We urge the authorities to conduct a swift and thorough investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice. We also call for calm amidst heightened emotions and urge residents of Aba and Abia State to cooperate with law enforcement officials.”
The organisation further implored all parties to embrace peace and dialogue, stressing that violence never resolves conflict, but only serves to create more division and suffering.
“Let us work together to uphold peace and security in our communities. The attack in Aba, unfortunately, is not an isolated event. The Southeast has been grappling with security challenges in recent times, including those posed by separatist groups and criminal elements. This deteriorating situation not only threatens the safety and well-being of residents, but also hinders economic development in the region.
“To arrest this decline, a multi-pronged approach is necessary. Ndigbo Lagos urges the government to investigate the Aba attack thoroughly and bring the perpetrators to justice; increase collaboration between security agencies and community leaders while open communication and intelligence sharing are crucial.”
The group also called on the government to address the root causes of youth restiveness in the region. It noted that lack of opportunity and social injustice could create fertile ground for extremism. The group urged the government to invest in economic development initiatives in the Southeast stressing that a thriving economy offers a pathway away from violence. Ndigbo Lagos called on all stakeholders to work together to restore peace and security in the Southeast.
“We urge our youths to embrace dialogue and non-violent means of resolving grievances as a secure and prosperous Southeast benefits all Nigerians.”
