The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has forged a crucial partnership with the Nigerian Navy for the protection of waterways in the Niger Delta region.

As part of the efforts, the NDDC has handed over a state-of-the-art strategic naval location at Ayakoro community, Ogbia Local Government Area, to the Nigerian Navy.

The facilities handed over to the Navy include a fully furnished administrative block; a fully furnished 40-man houseboat with two units of 100kva generators; two units of gunboats powered by 200 Hp x2 units of Yamaha engines each; a newly built operational floating jetty; a 60kva solar inverter installed in the administrative block, and a 30kva solar inverter installed in the 40-man houseboat.

Speaking at the unveiling on Friday at Ayakoro, the Managing Director of NDDC, Dr. Sam Ogbuku, noted that there is a nexus between security and development, and all efforts must be put in place to support security agencies in securing the Niger Delta Region.

“For us in the NDDC, we believe that development and security are intertwined because, without security, there would be no development. Hence, we have decided to forge a partnership with the security agencies across the Niger Delta.

“Let me say that under this administration, we have our strength in that partnership by supporting security agencies across the Niger Delta.  It is not only the Nigerian Navy, but also all security agencies. This is because they play a complementary role, ensuring that the peace we enjoy in the Niger Delta today is sustained.

“This facility is going to benefit the citizens of the Niger Delta. The project is aimed at providing security for the waterways of the Niger Delta.  Because every waterway is a gateway for criminals to perpetrate crime, and not until we are able to secure all our waterways, we would not be able to curb criminality.
