The Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Dr Sam Ogbuku, has warned Nigerian youths against engaging in cybercrime.

According to him, choosing a career path in tech development should not include using it for criminal and other illegal activities.

Ogbuku, who spoke at an event tagged Bayelsa Creatives Converge (BCC), organised to deliberate on ways to maximize from the creative sector in Bayelsa State, promised to support the training of 500 Bayelsa youths in Artificial Intelligence and other related areas.

The NDDC boss’s disclosure came after the Chief Executive Officer of Tripli Innovative Limited, Onowode Derick, said he had commenced the free training of 500 Bayelsans in the state.

According to Ogbuku, the NDDC’s support for the training is to encourage many more Bayelsans to take advantage of the digital economy for a new career path.

He urged Bayesans and Niger Delta youths not to allow their environment to limit their self-development, stressing that the NDDC has several youth initiatives that provide legitimate opportunities for personal and financial development.

“Tech is something that we must take advantage of. We must look at areas where you don’t need the government to employ you. The government will support you, but not everybody can do a government job. Let us take advantage of the innovations that are open to us. Tech is actually unlimited. We have people who are doing very well through Fintech in Lagos, ’’ he said.

Ogbuku, who reflected on his own humble beginning and resisting pressures to get involved in untoward activities, implored the Niger Delta and Bayelsa youths to take advantage of the NDDC youth internship.

He pointed out that the youths should channel their energy into areas such as software development, YouTube channels that provide financial independence.

“For us in NDDC, we also have the youth internship scheme and our project, which we have merged into the NDDC Renewed Hope Youth Empowerment Scheme, which we are trying to ensure we make better by engaging youth in areas of their competence. We also have the Niger Delta Chamber of Commerce, which NDDC midwifed with an initial seed of N5 billion to give soft loans to people for business. We are going to another N5billion, which will be distributed again.”
