The Nigerian Navy’s Forward Operating Base (FOB) Bonny has successfully rescued 59 individuals from the dredging vessel MV AMBIKA 4, which was operating near Okpobo River in a turbulent area.
According to a statement released by Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, Director of Naval Information, the rescue operation, conducted from the night of July 29 to 10 a.m. on July 30, involved significant challenges due to rough sea conditions.
The statement revealed that Lt.-Commander Gideon Gwaza, the Base Operations Officer, tragically lost his life during the mission. Gwaza, a highly trained combat diver, fell overboard accidentally while the rescue operation was underway. His death underscores the dangerous conditions faced by Navy personnel during such operations.

The dredging vessel, contracted to Sterling Global Oil Limited, was reported to be at risk of sinking near the Okpobo River entrance, an area known for its rough waters at this time of year.
To tackle the emergency, FOB Bonny deployed a rescue team comprising 10 armed personnel in two Interceptor Boats, led by the Base Operations Officer. Due to the severity of the waves, additional reinforcement was provided by another squadron of three boats. The mission was further supported by Nigerian Navy Ship GONGOLA, drones, and both Nigerian Navy and Airforce helicopters.
“Despite the difficulties, all 59 crew members were successfully rescued,” Adams-Aliu stated. “The Nigerian Navy deeply mourns Lt.-Commander Gwaza’s loss, honoring his bravery and sacrifice.”
The Nigerian Navy praised Gwaza’s dedication, noting that his sacrifice reflects the ongoing risks and commitment of its personnel to ensuring maritime safety.
