Operatives of the Nigerian Navy in Lagos said they have intercepted 45 bags of substance suspected to be cannabis sativa with a street value of about N100million. According to the Commander of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Beecroft, the operational arm of the Force, Commodore Paul Nimmyel, the substance was intercepted near Ilesha Beach area of Lagos.
The commander who was represented by the base Executive Officer, Navy Captain Idongesit Udoessien, made the disclosure during the official handover of the substance at the Naval Base in Apapa. He said the seizure was made possible following action from the Navy’s Quick Response Team following credible intelligence. Commodore Nimmyel said: “The team intercepted two wooden boats suspected of transporting illegal substances around Takwa Bay and Ilesha Beach Axis. The operation led to the seizure of 45 bags of suspected cannabis sativa, although the suspects escaped on sighting our patrol team.”

The commander said the operation was part of the Navy’s on-going efforts to curb drug trafficking and enhance maritime security under the leadership of Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla.
“The Nigerian Navy remains actively engaged in supporting internal security operations and working in close collaboration with sister agencies to safeguard lives and property within the nation’s maritime environment,” he said.
Receiving the consignment, Deputy Commander of the NDLEA Marine Command, Emmanuel Morrison Udo, said the drugs would be moved to the agency’s central exhibit store for safekeeping and would be destroyed in accordance with legal procedures once court orders are obtained.
