Government and commercial activities were on Monday paralysed in public institutions in Ekiti State, following the nationwide strike embarked upon by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC)and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).
In compliance with the national strike, government offices, public schools, High and Customary Courts and other public institutions were shut and economic activities paralysed in the state.
The labour enforcers picketed few banks that opened for businesses in Ado-Ekiti, the capital city and other cities in the state.
However, a handful of political appointees were seen doing skeletal works in their offices and few lawmakers of the State House of Assembly who reported for work had made themselves available because the day coincided with the lawmakers’ celebration of their one year in office.
A statement issued by the NLC Chairman in the state in the early hours of Monday, Comrade Kolapo Olatunde, directed leadership of all affiliate unions in the state to ensure full compliance with the national strike, as directed by the National body.
According to the chairman, the strike became necessary and the last resort, after labour unions had displayed uncommon understanding over the need to improve on workers’ welfare, especially as it had to do with new minimum wage.
He directed that all workers should stay back home, until further directive from the National body.
The Chairman also called on all leaders of affiliate unions to also monitor the strike, and ensure effectiveness.
