National anthem: Martins urges Tinubu to focus more on issues that touch citizens’ lives

By Vera Wisdom-Bassey

Archbishop Alfred Adewale Martins has called on the President Bola Tinubu administration to focus more on issues that will touch lives of the citizenry instead of the national anthem.

Martins made the call during a press briefing on his 65th anniversary at the Holy Cross Cathedral, Lagos.

He said reverting to the old national anthem should not be issue the government should be facing right now, but adequate steps should be taken on how to make things work in the country, and the issues that touch the lives of the people, should be paramount, as well as doing business in the country by foreigners and Nigerians alike.

Martins called on the Tinubu administration to bring back true federalism that will gender sense of patriotism, and at the same time bring change of aspiration as Nigerians.

He called for reappraising national policies, such as introducing state policing.“bring policing nearer to the people,” and urged the government to refer to and bring back the 2019 national conference report which has a realistic solution to the numerous problems being faced today in the country.

He called on the Federal Government to look into the problems of education and the ongoing hardship in the country and proffer solutions to all the problems that the country is facing and advised “government to set policies that will ensure education becomes cheaper and more affordable for the poor.

“The leader should move the country forward, so that Nigeria can be great again because everything needed to make Nigeria prosperous are all around us.

“But can we say our leaders have the political will to make this happen? We must know that one day, we shall all be accountable to almighty God, even to the people that elected us into power.” he said.

The archbishop said he believed Nigeria will be better than it is now, and with the right leadership purpose and sincerity of heart, “we can truly build a viable country that we all can be proud of.

“We pray that all that is making our country backward and not forward and also affecting the prosperity of the nation be erased.”
