A Civil Society Organization ( CSO), Save Nigeria Forum( SNF) has said that that robust oversight by the National Assessment is crucial in nurturing public trust and ensuring accountability in government.

The CSO, in a statement, jointly signed by its Convener, Abdul Ahmed and Executive Director, Mansur Adegbite, said alleged attempts by opposition groups to undermine the oversight function of the National Assembly was condemnable.

The group expressed reservations over allegations of padding of the 2024 budget against the leadership of the National Assembly, saying they are unfounded.

It noted that such allegations “not only jeopardize the credibility of the legislative institution but also pose a threat to the foundational principles of democracy upon which Nigeria is built. ”

The CSO frowned against alleged ” exploitation of genuine concerns surrounding budgetary processes by certain opposition factions for political gain. “Consequently, it cautioned ” against the dissemination of baseless accusations and the propagation of divisive narratives that risk eroding public confidence in democratic institutions.”

Furthermore, it urged ” stakeholders, including political parties, civil society organizations, and the media, to uphold the sanctity of democratic principles and refrain from engaging in actions detrimental to national unity and cohesion.”

The group, while passing a, vote of confidence on the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio and the Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, implored National Assembly leaders “to remain steadfast in their dedication to serving the interests of the Nigerian populace and safeguarding democratic norms ”
