In a bid to bolster agricultural productivity and ensure food security, the Nasarawa State Government, under the leadership of Governor Abdullahi Sule, has launched the sales of over 13,000 bags of fertiliser earmarked for the 2024 dry season farming.

The event, held in Lafia on Tuesday, witnessed the presence of key dignitaries including the State Assembly Speaker, Rt Hon Danladi Jatau, and other esteemed members.

Governor Sule emphasised the importance of responsibility in handling the fertiliser distribution process, cautioning that individuals involved would be held accountable for any irregularities. He declared a subsidised rate of N12,000 per bag, significantly lower than the market price of N21,000, aimed at easing the financial burden on farmers.

“We are committed to enhancing food production and ensuring food security in the State,” Governor Sule reaffirmed. “Our administration remains steadfast in harnessing the agricultural potentials of Nasarawa State.”

Dr Peter Ibrahim Akwe, Chairman of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly Committee on Agriculture, expressed optimism that the fertiliser distribution would lead to bumper harvests in the state, urging stakeholders to ensure equitable access for genuine farmers.

Acknowledging the Governor’s initiative, Hon Aminu Muazu Maifata, the State ALGON Chairman, and the Emir of Lafia, Justice Sidi Bage (Rtd), pledged to oversee the proper distribution of fertilisers to intended beneficiaries.

Alh Umar Dan’Akano, the Commissioner for Agriculture, highlighted the pivotal role of fertilisers in bolstering food security, emphasising the necessity of the initiative.

Amb Isaac Kigbu, State Chairman of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), lauded Governor Sule’s proactive approach in addressing farmers’ needs and ensuring resource availability for increased productivity.

Daily Sun gathered that the collaborative efforts between the government and agricultural stakeholders underscore a shared commitment to advancing the agricultural sector and mitigating challenges faced by farmers.

The launch signifies a concerted effort towards agricultural revitalisation, reflecting the government’s dedication to fostering sustainable development and prosperity in Nasarawa State.
