In response to a growing shortage of medical personnel exacerbated by global migration trends among healthcare workers, Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital (DASH) in Lafia has welcomed 28 new medical doctors into its ranks.
According to a statement signed by the Chief Medical Director, Dr. Ikrama Hassan and sent to journalist on Monday stated that the initiative aims to fill vacancies left by those who have departed in pursuit of opportunities abroad.
Dr. Ikrama acknowledged the challenges posed by brain drain in the medical profession, particularly intensified post-COVID-19 pandemic. “The lapses in the medical world highlighted during the pandemic prompted developed nations to open their borders to healthcare givers, especially medical doctors,” he explained.
He emphasized the dual challenge faced by states across Nigeria, where medical professionals often migrate either internationally or to federal health institutions, creating significant gaps in local healthcare delivery.
Despite these challenges, Dr. Ikrama expressed optimism about addressing the personnel shortage. “The governor of Nasarawa State has prioritized the health sector, granting DASH express permission to swiftly replace departing staff to ensure uninterrupted patient care,” he stated.
Dr. Ikrama highlighted the strategic importance of these new appointments, noting, “The addition of 28 doctors is a crucial step towards bolstering our capacity to meet the healthcare needs of our community.”
The influx of new medical personnel is expected to enhance DASH’s capabilities across various specialties, thereby improving service delivery and patient outcomes. Dr. Ikrama affirmed, “These doctors bring diverse skills and experiences that will enrich our healthcare services.”
The CMD added that the hospital still expects more doctors as those employed may not be sufficient considering the daily influx of patients into hospital requiring attending.
Reflecting on the broader impact, Dr. Ikrama emphasised the significance of governmental support in mitigating healthcare workforce challenges. “The proactive measures taken by Nasarawa State demonstrate a commitment to addressing healthcare gaps and ensuring sustainable healthcare delivery,” he remarked.
He further expressed confidence in the hospital’s ability to overcome current staffing challenges. “With these new appointments, we are poised to maintain high standards of healthcare provision and continue serving our community effectively.”
