NASA provided an update on astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, who have been stranded on the International Space Station (ISS) since June due to a malfunction on their Boeing Starliner spacecraft.

Wilmore and Williams arrived on June 5 and were supposed to return by mid-June, but helium leaks and propulsion issues delayed their departure.

NASA’s safety chief, Russ DeLoach, noted both astronauts are experienced with the ISS. Data analysis on the Starliner’s issues is expected to conclude next week, potentially leading to a flight readiness review.

One option is to return the astronauts on the SpaceX Crew-9 mission in September, which could bring them back in February 2025. The Starliner might still return autonomously if necessary, with Boeing affirming the craft’s safety.

NASA continues to evaluate the Starliner’s manoeuvring thrusters, which malfunctioned during the spacecraft’s first crewed mission.
