NANS Condemn Killing Of Students In Kogi, Oyo, Ebonyi

From Fred Ezeh, Abuja

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has condemned the recent increase in the killings of students in some of Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.

NANS specifically mentioned the recent murders of James Michael Anajuwe and Musa Hussein, both students of the Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH) in Lokoja, Kogi state. The association also condemned the death of Miss Favour Ugwuka, a final-year student of Ebonyi State University, who reportedly committed suicide on Wednesday, 22nd May, due to pressure from a lecturer who repeatedly failed her in his course. Additionally, NANS condemned the unjust killing of a student from Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo, identified as Alex, by his fellow students over an alleged phone theft on Saturday, May 25th.

In a statement on Monday, NANS President, Comrade Lucky Emonefe, said the recent increase in student killings poses a threat to the education system in Nigeria. He expressed concern that such incidents could continue to instil fear in students who are eager to pursue their studies for the betterment of society. While NANS strongly believes that suicide is not a solution to any problem, the association condemned the actions of the lecturer that led to the death of Miss Favour.

NANS called for an immediate investigation into the matter, as the association believes it will serve as a deterrent to others with similar intentions. The student body also demanded justice for the soul of the student from Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo, identified as Alex.

The NANS President emphasized that it is crucial for the authorities to fulfill their constitutional duty of ensuring the safety and security of students, both on and off campus, as the recent incidents have exposed significant security gaps that must be addressed urgently.

The NANS President maintained that under his leadership, the student body will continue to advocate for justice for these innocent students who have untimely lost their lives.
