The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has recorded fresh enforcement actions in Delta and Lagos states, securing the conviction of a man for naira abuse and arraigning another over an alleged N9.87 million theft.
In Delta State, Justice F. A. Olubanjo of the Federal High Court, Asaba, convicted and sentenced one Agbanashi Young to six months imprisonment for spraying and abusing naira notes.
Young was prosecuted on a one-count charge bordering on the spraying and mutilation of the Naira, an offence contrary to Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007.
The court heard that the offence occurred on November 10, 2023, during a cultural celebration known as “Afor Day” in Ndokwa East Local Government Area of Delta State, where the defendant sprayed and stepped on N10,000 in N200 denominations.
He pleaded guilty to the charge, prompting prosecution counsel, Francis Jirbo, to urge the court to convict him accordingly.
Defence counsel, however, pleaded for leniency, noting that the defendant was remorseful.

Justice Olubanjo subsequently sentenced him to six months imprisonment with an option of a N500,000 fine and ordered him to sign an undertaking to be of good behaviour.
In a separate development, the Lagos Zonal Directorate 1 of the EFCC arraigned Andrew Odekina before Justice Mojisola Dada of the Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja over an alleged N9,873,215 fraud.
Odekina was docked on a one-count charge bordering on retention of proceeds of criminal conduct, contrary to the EFCC (Establishment) Act, 2004.
According to the commission, the defendant allegedly received and retained the sum in his FCMB account in 2025, funds believed to be part of over N3.09 billion fraudulently obtained from bank customers through unauthorised access to their accounts.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Following his plea, prosecution counsel, Babatunde Sonoiki, requested a trial date and asked the court to remand the defendant pending trial.
Justice Dada adjourned the matter until May 11, 2026, for commencement of trial and ordered that the defendant be remanded in a correctional facility.
