The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) is seeking the support of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) to implement biometric identification cards for dockworkers and seafarers.

MWUN president-general, Francis Bunu Abi, who recently led the union’s delegation to meet with NIMASA’s director-general, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, and his executive team, reiterated the importance of biometric registration and identification of union members to distinguish legitimate dockworkers and seafarers from impostors.

According to him, the initiative aims to enhance security, prevent theft and pilferage, and promote a safe business environment in Nigerian ports.

The MWUN leader also highlighted the union’s ongoing collaboration with the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) to build a Seafarers Recreational Center in Apapa.

The project, supported by NIMASA, will provide a welcoming environment for seafarers during port calls and generate economic benefits for the union. Dr. Mobereola assured the union of NIMASA’s commitment to the project, which was initiated by his predecessor.

The visit reflected the strong partnership between MWUN and NIMASA.

The NIMASA boss, Dr. Mobereola however  congratulated MWUN president, Abi on his election victory and expressed hope for continued synergy between the two organizations in promoting Nigeria’s maritime sector.
