From Fred Ezeh, Abuja
A large number of Muslim youths on Friday staged a protest at the premises of the National Mosque in Abuja, to register their anger with what transpired in Sweden recently which they regarded as blasphemy.
It was gathered that the protest started shortly before the Jumma’t prayers and continued after the prayers when more youths joined the protest, thus obstructing vehicular movement.
Armed with placards with several messages, including ‘Qur’an is our guide’ among several others, and also chanting solidarity songs, the protesters barricaded the road, thus causing motorists to take alternative routes to their destination.
They demanded that world leaders should speak up on the matter, and also sought severe punishment for the Iraqi immigrant that committed the blasphemous act.
Few days ago, an Iraqi immigrant burnt Islam’s Holy Book outside a mosque in Stockholm, Sweden, during the major Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, an act that the man said displayed his feelings about the Quran.
The action has triggered widespread condemnation in the Islamic world
