Moses Alalade Champions Green Skills Training for Nigerian University Students

Moses Alalade, National Ex-Officio of the National Association of University Students (NAUS), is leading efforts to equip Nigerian students with the skills needed to thrive in green jobs. As the world transitions toward a low-carbon economy, green jobs—roles that positively impact the environment—are becoming essential in addressing climate change and promoting sustainable development. Alalade sees this shift as both an opportunity for national progress and a pathway to meaningful employment for young Nigerians.

“Green energy is pivotal to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG 7),” Alalade asserts, “by offering renewable solutions that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate climate risks.” He emphasizes the importance of preparing students with the expertise required to contribute effectively to the renewable energy sector.

Before his current leadership role, Alalade actively championed sustainability initiatives as the Chapter President of Student Energy, a global nonprofit focused on clean energy capacity-building. During his tenure, he launched two flagship programs, the Switch Initiative and the Spark Initiative, which introduced students to clean energy concepts and practical applications.

The Switch Initiative served as a weekly platform for students to engage in discussions about renewable energy, connect with industry professionals, and build relevant skills. Meanwhile, the Spark Initiative focused on implementing sustainable energy projects in rural communities. One notable effort was extending energy access to physically challenged individuals in off-grid areas, demonstrating how grassroots solutions can address critical energy challenges while empowering vulnerable populations.

Alalade credits collaborations with government agencies and organizations like Student Energy for supporting these efforts. He emphasizes the importance of expanding such partnerships to scale green skills training programs and broaden their reach. “Strategic partnerships are essential to equipping students with the tools they need to lead in the sustainable energy sector,” he notes.

In his call to action, Alalade urges government bodies, industry stakeholders, and educational institutions to support initiatives that prepare young professionals for the fast-growing field of renewable energy. He believes that investing in green skills training will position Nigeria as a leader in sustainable energy while addressing pressing climate challenges.

By prioritizing green jobs and sustainable solutions, Moses Alalade is empowering a generation of Nigerian students to contribute meaningfully to a cleaner, more resilient future.
