Borno State governor, Babagana Zulum has described monitoring and evaluation of government programmes, policies and projects as critical to good governance and growth of any state or nation.

Zulum spoke at the presentation and dissemination of Borno State Monitoring and Evaluation Readiness Assessment Report yesterday in Maiduguri, the state capital.

The governor, who was represented by the State Commissioner for Reconstruction, Rehabilitation and Resettlement, Arc Isa Halidu, said monitoring and evaluation are essential for every government to measure performance and effectiveness of programmes and projects.

“The programme aims to train staff for proper understanding and implementation of M&E frameworks,” he said.

He commended the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) for supporting the government to conduct the exercise.  UNICEF Acting Chief of Borno Field Office, Mr Joseph Senesie, in his remark, said robust monitoring and evaluation system is a necessary tool for recovery in a state challenged by conflict, displacement and devastating flooding.

“It is the foundation upon which we can build effective policies, programmes, and interventions that deliver tangible results for the people of Borno State,” Senesie stated.

He said the findings of the assessment provide a clear roadmap for strengthening the state’s monitoring and evaluation system, noting that they highlight both the strengths and gaps in the existing framework of the state.

Stakeholders at the event agreed there was need to bridge the gap between monitoring and evaluation in the state.
