Former Governor of Imo State, Achike Udenwa has lamented that politicians can buy their way into elective posts with the “right amount of money”.
According to him, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the police, the army, and electorate can be bought.
Udenwa made the assertion as a guest on State Affairs podcast hosted by Edmund Obilo.
A snippet of the interview was shared on social media on Saturday.
The former governor said it was unfortunate that the Nigerian society has degenerated to one in which a political candidate’s antecedents and character are relegated to the background.

“Unfortunately, our society has grown to such a level where if you say vote for me, I am no longer asking what you can do. What are your antecedents? What type of character do you have? We don’t ask such questions again,” he said.
He added, “Even if I don’t vote for you, you can buy your way through if you have the right amount of money.”
Asked if politicians could buy INEC, the police, the army, and the voters, he responded: “You can buy everybody.”
Udenwa noted that the unwholesome manner leaders get into office is responsible for the challenges Nigeria continue to face.
“You do all sorts of things to become governor. ‘I want to be minister, I want to be senator’ and the rest of them, but most of these people don’t have the quality of a leader.
“Square pegs in a round hole; that is part of the problems we have,” he said.
