Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) said it welcomed the decision of Plateau State Government to ban night grazing, as one of the measures to curtail the incessant killings in the state.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang had, in a statewide broadcast, reeled out measures to contain the spate of killings in which more than 100 people had been killed in Bokkos and Bassa local government areas of the state. Among the measures was the ban on transportation of cows beyond 7pm and ban on the operation of motorcycles from 7pm to 6am

Secretary of MACBAN, Alhaji Ibrahim Yusuf Babayo, who spoke to our correspondent on phone on the development, however, wants to the government to extend the ban on transportation to 8pm instead of 7pm. According to him, this would help transporters caught up in traffic to reach their destinations.

Babayo said: “We don’t graze at night. We welcome the ban on night grazing because our members do not graze in the night. Th government can set up machineries to apprehend those who graze at night, but on our own part, we don’t graze at night. We only plead that the ban on transportation of cattle be extended to 8pm so that those caught up in one problem or the other can reach their destination and not caught up by time constraints.”

His views were reechoed by his the Financial Secretary, Abdulmunin Umar, who wants the ban to be extended to 9pm.

He said: “We will only have a problem with the government if they ask us not to graze at day time. But, our members don’t graze at night I believe this measure will help to curb cattle rusting, which is one of the major causes of clashes in Plateau State.
