The Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MDCN), last week, inducted 81 new Babcock University graduates into the profession, the highest number of inductees from the institution in recent times.

The event held at the 600-seater Medical School Auditorium, marked Babcock’s 10th induction and provided a platform for admonition and recognition of academic excellence.

While congratulating the inductees, the vice-chancellor, Prof. Ademola Tayo, reminded them that, wherever they worked, they would be expected to be diligent and focused.

“People will look up to you, respect you, and appreciate your efforts. You can do exceptional things for people if you do not let the system in which you work weigh you down,” he said.

Reiterating the need for integrity, the council’s registrar, Dr. Tosan Erhabor, called on the inductees to apply discipline and dedication to achieve success.

Dr. Erhabor, represented by the council’s Director of Administration, Dr. Godwin Aikpitanyi-Iduitua, charged them to shun superficial gratification and work hard.

“The future is bright for those who work according to professional ethics,” he said.

Similarly, the dean of Public & Allied Health, Professor Dora Akinboye urged them to be prepared for challenges as they embark on their new life journey.

“Do not be satisfied with merely reflecting the thoughts and ideas of other people, Go the extra mile. Be innovative and creative so that you can make a difference,” she said.

For the head of the department, Prof. John Ihongbe, the reminder is to always put God first and continue to improve in the area of specialization.

“Be. focused. Take responsibility for your action or inaction,” he said. “When you get it wrong, the medical doctor gets it wrong because you mislead him.”

Echoing similar views, the overall best student, Lauretta Etafo in her valedictory speech counseled her set mates thus: “As we go from here, remember to put your Creator first – never under-estimate the power of prayer, it is the back-end of wonderful results; choose your words wisely, for they cannot be retrieved.”
