Maternal mortality: Bauchi targets 45,000 pregnant women for MMS research

No fewer than 45,000 pregnant women in Bauchi State will be selected for the implementation of a research project for Optimizing Adherence to Multiple Micronutrient Supplementation MMS.

Governor Bala Mohammed disclosed this at the launch of the MMS project for pregnant women on Thursday at Government House, Bauchi.

Bala Mohammed said that three selected local government areas of Dass, Ganjuwa and Giade in the state have been selected for the MMS project

The pilot project, aimed at addressing the burden of maternal mortality among women of reproductive age, is a collaboration between the State Government, Federal Ministry of Health and Nutrition International.

Already, 84 health care centers have been selected for administration of the supplements on the 45, 000 targeted pregnant women from the benefitting local government areas.

Governor Mohammed, who underscored the importance of the programme, assured that the state would fulfill all its obligations including payment of counterparts towards successful implementation of the project.

The governor, who was represented by Secretary to the State Government, Ibrahim Kashim, appreciated the development partners for complementing the efforts of his administration on improving the maternal nutrition of women in the state.

The Country Director, Nutrition International, Dr. Osita Okonkwo said over 900 bottles of the supplement which would serve as alternative to Iron Folic Acid, have been distributed to health facilities across the selected local government areas

Okonkwo commended Bauchi State government for its commitment to implementing all programmes aimed at improving the wellbeing of the citizens
