Former First Lady, the late Mrs. Maryam Babangida, Dr. Ngozi Olejeme and two others were given an uncommon award of recognition by the Asaba Development Union (ADU) recently for what was described as their uncommon impact and resilience in putting Asaba on the path of rapid development.
President-general of the Asaba Development Union, Dr. JeanRose Nwanne Amaka, described Maryam Babangida and Dr. Ngozi Olejeme as role models that Asaba women are looking up to to be like them.
“Growing up, I always looked up to them and admired them and desired to make impact in the lives of humanity like they have done. And this award of recognition is just to acknowledge them and to challenge others that the world is watching our actions” she said.
Dr. Amaka praise Ngozi Olejeme for her leadership role, community mobilisation and developmental strides, saying Asaba has benefitted from her human development impact, assuring her that the people of Asaba will continue to appreciate and acknowledge her developmental impact on society.

Speaking on the need for women and grandchildren to have their inheritance, the Asagba of Asaba expressed need to discard the obsolete traditional culture by comparing them to what is obtainable in more advanced nations, rather than relegating women and girl-child with capacity in the form of discrimination. He outlined various developmental strides he has accomplished since his coronation as the Asagba of Asaba, including distribution of dialysis equipment to Federal Medical Cenre, Asaba, and the Asaba Specialist Hospital, building of school, scholarship awards, community leadership, security of lives and properties, as well as the forthcoming empowerment of 100 Asaba indigenes by this weekend.
While thanking the ADU for recognizing her impact and contributions to community and human capital development, Dr. Ngozi Olejeme drummed support for President Bola Tinubu and Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State, calling on all Nigerians to support and pray for them to make more impact. She dedicated the award to God Almighty, who “kept her alive” to see her people recognizing her impact, with an assurance to continue to stand by Asaba community and Deltans in general.
The inaugural annual lecture and award ceremony, which took place at the Maryam Babangida Women Development Centre in Abuja, was graced by the Asagba of Asaba, Prof. Epiphany Chigbogu Azinge. The executive members of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide was lead to the ceremony by the President-General, Senator John Azuta Mbata, Chief Mrs. Faith Majemite, captains of industry, chiefs, Asaba indigenes and the representative of the late Maryam Babangida, Mrs. Aisha Abu, programme, coordinator, Better Life for Rural Women.
